The History

In 1949 Sophie and Harry Domansky immigrated to America after surviving the Holocaust. They, along with their 3 year old son, Martin, arrived on Ellis Island and settled in Brooklyn, New York. With seven dollars in his pocket and an eagerness to start anew, Harry took a job laying linoleum floors for Pintchick Paints & Hardware located at 478 Bergen Street in Brooklyn, NY. There, Harry became well known and well respected by business owners in the trade.

In 1955 the opportunity to buy an existing floor covering business and its associated building arose. Harry dug deep into his savings and became a principal of Bergen Tile Paint & Linoleum located at 470 Dean Street in Brooklyn. Harry operated the store and oversaw installations. Sophie worked behind the cash register. Over the next 50 years Harry, Sophie, and Martin built Bergen Tile into a successful floor covering retailer with stores throughout New York’s five boroughs. Harry passed away on April 9, 2009 at the age of 84. Sophie passed away on March 27, 2012 at the age of 86.

Heritage is defined as property, practices and characteristics that are passed down through the years from generation to generation.

Harry and Sophie were our family’s foundation. They were our parents and grandparents. They would be proud of our accomplishments as well as the legacy they left behind in Brooklyn. We are proud of them and honor them each day.

This is our family story. This is our heritage.
